![]() ![]() Miss Wanda is gone she sold her place while I was cocooned in depression at some point this spring. ![]() I wear flip-flops on my own stoop, not worried about the infamous ringworm but suddenly self-conscious where I should be comfortable. Now someone calls the fire department every time the hydrant is opened, even when we use the sprinkler cap that reduces water waste. The feel of the stoop’s cool brown concrete beneath my feet had been calming. Three stories of century-old brick stood behind me like a solid wall of protection, imbued with the love of my mother and my neighbors and the tenacity of my block.īack then, I used to go barefoot, even though Miss Wanda, who’d wrench open the fire hydrant for kids on sweltering days like the ones we’ve had this summer, used to tell me I was gonna get ringworm. I sigh, close my eyes, and try to remember the freedom I used to feel, first as a carefree child, then as a know-it-all teenager, as I held court from this top step, with the world rolling out before me. ![]() 7/8/2023 0 Comments Colson whitehead zombie![]() "And I remember being like, 'Mommy, what are they doing to that woman?' And her being like, 'It's a comment on society.' So I think it's helped my work, even if it wasn't entirely appropriate." ![]() Whitehead was introduced to serious, adult horror movies at a young age, including "A Clockwork Orange" as a 10-year-old. "Until I was in college, I wanted to write the black 'Shining' or the black 'Salem's Lot.' If you took any Stephen King novel and put 'the black' in front of it, that's what I wanted to do." "I always knew I'd write a horror novel eventually," he tells Kurt Andersen. Whitehead reads a scene from the book, in which the protagonist remembers walking in on his parents in flagrante as he sees a more horrifying encounter take place. The coup is that the book is chilling, funny, and smart all at the same time. It's the real deal, with brains being eaten and the living going to war against the undead. It's about zombies - and not some postmodern metaphorical zombies. But his book, "Zone One"gets pretty lowbrow. Colson Whitehead is one of America's most respected novelists, the author of "The Intuitionist" and "Sag Harbor,"and a MacArthur genius. ![]() 7/8/2023 0 Comments Alexis henderson books![]() ![]() They had learned to prevail as champions over fear while in turn, I floundered, consumed by it. In comparison to the masters of the genre-the Shirley Jacksons and the Stephen Kings-I felt like a pitiful farce. I began to question whether or not I have the mental stamina required to excel in my trade of choice. While writing my own dark stories, I often ached for some reprieve or escapism. On the bad days, it can be painful and even triggering. On the good days, writing about the things that I fear most is an exhilarating, and yes triumphant experience. But I’ve come to realize that’s not entirely true. I would like to say that writing horror was some triumphant attempt to prevail over the anxieties that plagued me. As a person to whom fear is a kind of chronic condition, I didn’t understand why I repeatedly chose to engage the things that frightened me most. So it seemed strange that as I grew older, I chose to devote the bulk of my creative endeavors to the exploration of the horrific. Since the very beginning of my memories, fear has been a constant companion. ![]() As a child, friends and acquaintances often described me as timid or “high-strung.” I often remember being moved to tears-or worse yet terrified into a state of total detachment-by sudden fits of terror. For those that haven't read it it was first published in around 1900 and tells of Captain Joshua Slocum's epic around the world voyage in a boat he constructed himself, "The Spray". I'd completely forgotten what a fantastic read it is, so for your benefit, dear reader, here it is. ![]() This encouraged me to dig out the book and reread it. It feels very personal, like someone is whispering it to you in the dark of the night as you shut your eyes to listen. I think what makes this book so strong is not the magical yet realistic plot, nor the characters, nor the seamless prose, but rather the fact that you can tell that Maggie poured so much of her heart into the story. The characters wants and desires are also incredibly strong, which makes you want to cheer for them even more. Although entirely different, they are such dominating characters that it's hard to decide who you love most- and also who to root for. The first person perspective really lets you dive into the characters, and I love how strong both Sean and Puck are. Yet, I couldn't help but think when I turned the last page of the Scorpio Races that it *might* be better. Like, I feel like I gave a piece of my soul to those books. Now if you know me, you know I *love* The Raven Cycle. HOLY MOLY never did I think I would find myself crying over a horse, yet here I am. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments Stephen king shining sequel![]() The best performance in the movie, however, might be Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat. The cinematography is top-notch, especially during the film’s weirder parts and when our protagonists eventually return to the Overlook Hotel.
